Bitcoin’s Next Halving Is Closer Than Its Last Rally

The rally is a maybe. The scarcity is the point.

While Berlin argues over how to tax bitcoin and Washington fights its own bond market, the one part of bitcoin that answers to no committee keeps counting down. The next halving — when the reward paid to miners is cut in half — is due around April 2028, roughly a year and a half away.

By then more than 19.9 million of the eventual 21 million bitcoin will already exist. Under 5% is left to mine, and every four years the rate at which new coins arrive is cut again, marching toward zero.

It is tempting to read that as a countdown to the next rally. Past halvings were followed by enormous run-ups, and the charts get passed around every cycle. That extrapolation is the trap.

Scarcity that everyone can see coming is scarcity the market has had years to price.

The halving is the most predictable event in finance. Its date is known to the block; its effect on supply is arithmetic. Anything that predictable is, in theory, already in the price — which is why betting on a repeat of 2016 or 2020 because the calendar rhymes is a good way to be disappointed. Each halving also matters less than the last: the issuance it cuts is a smaller slice of the coins already circulating.

What the halving does do is quieter and more durable. It is the mechanism that makes bitcoin’s supply a promise rather than a policy — no board meeting can raise it, no buyback can flood it, no ministry can revise it. That is the property that separates bitcoin from every asset in this week’s headlines.

The tax codes will keep changing. The bond market will keep lurching. Governments will keep deciding, quarter by quarter, how much money to create. Bitcoin’s answer to all of it was fixed in 2009 and gets reaffirmed, on schedule, every four years. The rally is a maybe. The scarcity is the point.
