Bitcoin Treasury Companies Are Learning to Sell

The bitcoin-treasury company was sold as a machine that only goes one way: issue paper, buy coins, watch the balance sheet swell. This month the machine ran in reverse — and it turns out reverse was always in the gearbox.

MicroStrategy, the model everyone copied, paused buying and raised its cash pile to $3.75 billion — even selling 1,638 coins — to make sure it can pay its preferred dividends. Trump Media dumped 63% of its stack. Cipher Mining sold 1,166 BTC to fund a retrofit. BitGo is being sued over a loss its own bitcoin created on paper.

None of this means the model is broken. It means the model carries a condition the bull market let everyone ignore: a bitcoin treasury is a reserve only if you can afford never to sell it.

The believers will be the ones who don’t have to sell.

The companies that hold through the next drawdown are the ones funded with permanent capital — long-dated debt and preferred equity that can’t be called at the bottom. Strategy’s whole innovation was manufacturing exactly that: a preferred-stock engine that raised roughly $15 billion with no redemption cliff. Strive kept buying this month while paying a 13% preferred dividend. That is the steelman, and it is a good one.

The weak version is a company with an operating business that loses money, holding bitcoin against the shortfall. For that company the coins are not a conviction. They are a rainy-day fund — and it is raining.

Watch which companies sell into the next dip. The believers will be the ones who don’t have to.
