Public capacity crossed 5,600 bitcoin this spring while the node count kept shrinking. The money is pooling into fewer, bigger routers.
Two numbers on the Lightning Network are moving in opposite directions, and the gap between them is the story. Public capacity — the bitcoin committed to open payment channels — touched a fresh all-time high above 5,600 BTC this spring, roughly half a billion dollars. Over the same stretch, the count of public nodes kept drifting lower. The network is holding more money in fewer hands.
Monthly payment volume now runs comfortably north of $1.1 billion across more than 41,000 channels and some 17,000 public nodes. By almost any usage measure Lightning has crossed from experiment to infrastructure. The question is what kind of infrastructure it is becoming.
For most of Lightning’s life the pitch was radical decentralisation: anyone with a Raspberry Pi and a few thousand sats could run a node and route payments. That era is quietly ending. Running a routing node that actually earns now demands real capital to fund channels and active management to keep them balanced, and the economics no longer reward the hobbyist.
So the small operators are closing up shop or handing their coins to wallets that manage channels for them, while capital pools into a smaller set of large, well-run, professionally operated routing nodes. Include the private channels used by exchanges and mobile wallets and the network’s true capacity is estimated above 12,000 BTC — more than double what the public figures show.
The channels got deeper. The list of people who own them got shorter.
There are two honest ways to read this, and a bitcoin reader should hold both. The optimistic case is maturity. Payments infrastructure tends to concentrate around reliability; users want a route that works, not a route run from a bedroom. Deeper channels mean larger payments clear without failing, and professional operators mean better uptime. Visa did not get more useful by adding more mom-and-pop switchboards.
The wary case is centralisation creep. Lightning inherits bitcoin’s promise of no chokepoints, and a network that routes most of its volume through a shrinking set of large hubs starts to look like a place where a handful of operators could censor, surveil or price-gouge. Fewer, bigger nodes are easier to lean on than thousands of scattered ones — and “easier to lean on” is precisely the property bitcoin was built to avoid.
The number that settles the argument is not capacity — it is distribution. If the node count stabilises and capacity keeps climbing, Lightning is simply getting more efficient at the edges while staying open in the middle. If the node count keeps sliding while a shrinking cluster of hubs routes an ever-larger share, the centralisation worry graduates from theoretical to real.
For now the network is doing the thing payment networks do as they grow up: trading a little of its scruffy decentralisation for reliability and depth. Whether that trade stays “a little” is the metric worth tracking through the rest of 2026.
Lightning has never held more money or moved more payments — and never through fewer nodes. Deeper channels are good for users; a thinner map of operators is the thing to keep watching.
