SpaceX Carries 18,712 Bitcoin Into the Nasdaq-100

Index funds must now buy a bitcoin treasury whether they have a view on bitcoin or not.

SpaceX joined the Nasdaq-100 on Tuesday, weeks after its public debut — and its regulatory filings disclose 18,712 BTC on the balance sheet, about $1.2 billion at current prices. JPMorgan analysts estimate index rebalancing alone will push roughly $4.3 billion into the stock, because funds that track the index have no choice in the matter.

That mechanism is the story. Passive vehicles buy components in proportion to index weight, on rules, not conviction. A slice of every Nasdaq-100 tracker — retirement accounts included — now sits on top of a bitcoin treasury, without any investor deciding to own bitcoin.

Three treasuries in one index

SpaceX joins Tesla and Strategy as the third Nasdaq-100 company holding material bitcoin. Public companies collectively hold more than 1.26 million BTC, and the pattern has shifted from bitcoin-first vehicles toward diversified operating businesses that happen to keep coins — a rocket company, a carmaker, a software firm.

Demand generated by index rules, not discretionary conviction.

The company's bitcoin dates to 2021 and survived the sell-offs that flushed weaker treasuries. What changed is the wrapper: index membership converts a private conviction into a structural allocation, refreshed every time the index rebalances.

The honest caveats

SpaceX's weighting starts modest, and $4.3 billion buys SpaceX shares, not bitcoin — the flow supports the treasury only indirectly, in proportion to bitcoin's share of the company's value. And the pipeline runs both ways: a company dropped from an index gets sold just as mechanically.

The bottom line

The most durable adoption is the kind nobody opts into. Millions of index investors became indirect bitcoin holders on Tuesday, and none of them signed anything.
